Winter Skincare Routine: How to take care of dry/dehydrated skin

Posted by Atmosphera Beauty on

In the summer, we're pros at protecting our skin with sunscreen and hats, but in the winter, we often neglect it and regret it. How can you give your dry winter skin some love? Check out our tips and use our climate-responsive products.

WHY IS OUR SKIN SO DRY IN THE WINTER?

Winter is tough on our skin. When we brave the cold, our faces take a beating from the chill, the wind, and even the sun—sometimes all at once, sometimes for hours if you're an outdoor enthusiast.

As we go inside to warm up, our skin is exposed to the hot, dry air of furnaces and space heaters that suck away our skins moisture. Its no wonder that so many of us experience the effects: tight, itchy, sensitive skin thats dehydrated and desperately in need of replenishing. Sometimes, even our most beloved products don't feel like their helping.

Sometimes winter conditions can actually cause the skin to become oily so take care not to be confused by your skins signals. When the skin is losing hydration, it will ramp up natural oil production in an attempt to lock in moisture. Theres a chance that if your skin is shiny, it could be the result of dehydration.

IS OUR SKIN DRY OR DEHYDRATED?

How do you know if your skin is dehydrated or dry? Here are a few signs of dehydrated skin:

  • Itchiness
  • Tightness
  • Dullness
  • Sensitivity
  • Dehydration lines

Here are a few typical characteristics of dry skin:

  • Flaky all over or dry skin on face
  • Uncomfortably tight

PREVENTING DRY SKIN IN THE WINTER

To properly care for your skin during winter, it is essential to moisturize both internally and externally. Here are our expert recommendations:

Use only gentle cleansers. Harsh cleansers can strip away your skins natural oils and protective lipid barriers, worsening dryness and sensitivity. Try: Refresh - Organic Gel Facial Cleanser with Peppermint + Spearmint

Use plant-based face oils for lasting hydration and top-level moisture protection. Depending on your skin type and concerns, Try: Glow - Nourishing Skin Oil with Squalane + EFAs, & Antioxidants. Samples available online.

Ensure your lipid barrier is functioning properly, especially if you have advanced skin conditions like psoriasis or dermatitis.

Use a moisturizer made for winter. This time of year, were always being asked which moisturizer is best for dry skin in winter. Our answer is, one with humectants! These natural moisture agents— Shea butter, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and vegetable glycerin—are seasonal superheroes that attract and retain moisture.

With humectants in your moisture cream, your skin is instantly replenished and dewy. Depending on your skin type and concerns, Try: Boost  - Organic Hydrating Moisturizer with Bulgarian Rose + Sandalwood

Remember the eyes. The skin around the eyes is incredibly delicate even without the added stresses of winter. For extra protection, layer up with a fortifying serum and eye cream. Try: Revitalize - Rejuvenating Eye Serum with Niacinamide + Peptides

Don't forget sun protection during winter adventures. SPF moisturizer and sunglasses are essential. Try: Luminous - Tinted Mineral Waterproof Daily Sun Coverage SPF 44
